Rauw Alejandro

In the year 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track during the course of six months. The single a mix of pop music and reggaeton was not only a way to bring renewed interest for reggaeton, it also brought attention towards Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 had four songs in 2016, as opposed to two in 2015. At the peak of Despacito's popularity, however 19 predominantly Spanish tracks made the Top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 songs. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, well-known artists began collaborating with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team on MIA (2018), while Madonna and Maluma worked together on Medellin in the year 2019. At the time of 2020, some reggaeton performers were lamenting that the genre was moving towards mainstream. But a fresh generation, specifically Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the pace of evolution in reggaeton. His music often contained elements from other genres and electronic dance.
